ATLAS hazard reporting system for dog bites at work

Assessing the level of threat that a dog could pose and managing the risk before it escalates is crucial.

Merseyside Communications Workers Union developed a new system designed to achieve this. ATLAS (Animal Threat Level Assessment System) is a time-efficient hazard reporting system.

A postal worker who identifies an animal threat reports it to the person responsible in the back office. The report scores the likelihood of an attack and its potential severity.

Depending on the score, cases are dealt within the house- e.g. a dog owner may be contacted with an advice letter suggesting how their dog could be controlled. Medium and high scores are handled by the local authorities or the police.

The system facilitates sharing information between different agencies (the Royal Mail, local authorities and the police). Due to it’s success, it is now being rolled out in other areas.
